Page 2 of 5 APPLICATION NOTE 4.3-10 Calibration Therefore the standard calibration methods of using high cost calibration kits are not necessary for this interface. HUBER+SUHNER recommends the ‘Adapter Swapping Method’ and ‘De-embedding Method’ for calibration of the 4.3-10 interface. These methods provide the same degree of accuracy as calibration kits but at a fraction of the cost. 3 CALIBRATION METHODS 3.1 METHOD 1: DUT measurement with adapter swapping method In the adapter swapping method of calibration, the user calibrates the measuring equipment with standard precision adapters, e.g., N or PC 3.5. These adapters are then swapped with their matching HUBER+SUHNER 4.3-10 adapters which have same electrical length within a certain acceptable tolerance. The following examples show how to perform adapter swapping 2-port calibration for a DUT which has 4.3-10 male or female connectors. With this calibration method, there is no need for a 4.3-10 calibration kit, but conventional precision N and PC 3.5 calibration kits and adapters are used. Configuration 1 DUT type: 4.3-10 female Test port / cable: N male STEP 1 Calibrate with precision adapter VNA with N (m) cable Adapter – N (f) to N (m) 33_N-50-0-51 OSL/ECal STEP 2 Replace the 33_N-50-0-51 adapter with matching 4.3-10 adapter and connect with DUT VNA with N (m) cable Adapter – N (f) to 4.3-10 (m) 33_4310-N-50-X1 DUT with 4.3-10 (f) NOTE For VNA measurement cable with PC 3.5 (m) instead of N (m), replace the 33_N-50-51 adapter with matching 33_PC35-50-0-2 for calibration and 33_4310-PC35-50-X1 for measurement.
