Global cumu- lative wind power capacity increased to 743 GW 9 (+14 % year-on-year). Wind turbines are unbeat- able compared to other types of power plants when it comes to energy payback time. This is the time a power plant needs to generate as much energy as was or will be consumed for its produc- tion, construction and operation over its lifetime. Depending on its size, a wind turbine only requires four to eight months to generate this amount of electricity. For a wind turbine to operate at its optimum working point for maximum energy yield, numerous data must be continuously record- ed and transmitted. This includes wind speed, wind direction, rotor speed, and pitch as well as various operating parameters of the gear- box and generator, including all control signals. In addition, sophisticated sensors capture the deformation of rotor blades, tower and temperature distributions. Over 350 sensors are installed in a typical wind turbine. Fiber op- tic cables are the medium of choice for data transfer within, through, and between wind turbines and act as a centra for control and monitoring. F are insensitive to the strong that occur in the vicinity of p and are immune to the severe fields created by frequently oc strikes. Moreover, fiber optic data over the distances asso turbines virtually lossless.
